First Post

Woo Hoo I just contributed my first post to The Best Endings go check it out, and all the other wonderful contributors. Such a FUN way to start the New Year!

Linking up My Break

I know this is “Winter Break” and I know Christmas was just last weekend, but I am having a hard time “feeling” it. It was SIXTY_FOUR degrees today, and it’s supposed to be SEVENTY tomorrow. REALLY? I am someone all about nice weather but when Christmas rolls around and New Year’s is a day away I would at least like it to FEEL like the season. I mean geeze it feels like it did when I was a kid growing up in Arizona. I believe tomorrow will be a flip flops and Capri day. And of course if it is super nice now you KNOW what it is going to be like next week when school startsyep thirty below and freezing so we all get to experience INSIDE recess!

Well it was nice today and I had a really nice day visiting my son. We finally got to meet the new girlfriend, and she is super sweet. The poor girl doesn’t know what she’s in for I think she is going to fit it very nicely, although she was a little quiet todaybut who can blame her around this group. The kids had fun spending my money shopping and I even got some new shoes! I love shoes. Shoes and books my two favorite things to buy. I always feel good with them and I don’t have to buy above a size 8!!!

There’s a linky party going on over at A Clutter Free Classroom. She’s asking us to link up with what we did over our break. Hmmmm well the first half was spent finishing up shopping and wrapping, cookie parties, baking, cooking, cleaning, blogging, stalking, emailing, sewing, watching movies, creating, sleeping, and more cooking and cleaning. The second half was spenttaking down the Christmas things (not a decoration in sight), catching up with my bestest friends, and cooking, cleaning, baking, shopping, blogging, stalking, sewing, watching movies, reading, sleeping, cooking, cleaning, cooking, cleaningget the picture?
Don’t forget to check out the others linking up. I’m sure their vacations are much more exciting than mine.

While you’re out and roaming don’t forget to check in at The Best Endings. I’ll be introducing myself over there soon to all those that don’t know me, and telling everyone about my most favorite book in the whole wide world.well one of them.

I hope everyone has a super safe and fun New Year’s Eve and that the New Year brings you nothing but happiness and great blogging days!

My Slice of Intentions and 11 in 11

After writing a post I noticed  Kristin at A Teeny Tiny Teacher and Hadar at Miss Kindergarten are hosting a PARTY and everyone knows how much I LOVE parties so I decided to join in, you should too. It will be fun.
So here it goes thinking about the past while ringing in the new.

11. Favorite movie you watched
I wish I could say Footloose Because I REALLY wanted to see it when it came out, but I never did L I’m waiting for it to come out on DVD. I got The Help for Christmas and really enjoyed it, so I guess that would have to be my favorite. Can you tell I don’t see many movies?
10. Favorite TV series
I love The Good Wife. I liked Julianna Margulies when she was in ER and I really like her as The Good Wife.
9. Favorite restaurant
Teds. Mexican.  (I grew up in Arizona with REAL Mexican food). Ted’s is the closest I’ve found to the good stuff I grew up with. BUT since we don’t have Teds here in our town (or much else) Enrique’s is the next best thing.
8. Favorite new thing you tried
I guess my new IPhone. It’s pretty cool even though I still don’t have it all figured out.
7. Favorite gift you received
My new sewing machine for my birthday I hope to spend more time on it in 2012. My goal is to make MANY Christmas presents next year.
6. Favorite thing you pinned
A wrap bracelet that I showed my daughter and she learned to make. She has now made bracelets, key chains, and hat bands (that my brother has sold in his hat shop).

5. Favorite blog post
My favorite post comes from my first blog. I joined in the Slice of Life Challenge last year in March that the Two Writing Teachers host each spring. It is about my daughter and the mornings we share.  Not very Teachery I know but you did say MY favorite.

4. Favorite accomplishment
I started and completed my first class of Graduate School at OSU, with an A no less!

3. Favorite picture
Me and my family and my oldest brother and his family at my mom’s surprise 75th birthday party, my other brother and his family couldn’t make it.

2. Favorite memory
Our trip to Indiana to the All Write workshop with Katie Ray Wood, Debbie Miller, Ann Marie Corgil, and tons more amazing presenters. I hope I get to go back again this year.

1.Goal for 2012
Learn more, read more, write more, see more, listen more, love more, do more, be more...

This is what I was posting before I found the fun linky party....
I have noticed that many blogs are already talking about New Year resolutions and goals as teachers for the coming year. I too have been thinking about the New Year, and what it will bring. For the past few years I have done as the Two Writing Teachers blog about and try to choose One Little Word (OWL) to help me remember where I am going and who I choose to be. I have had words such as inspire, aspire, lead, family, and last year- energy. But this year I seem to be at an impasse.
I read somewhere once that instead of making “resolutions” (a resolve or determination to do something) you should make a list of “intentions” (an ACT or instance of determining MENTALLY upon some ACTION or RESULT). So this year my plan is to make a LIST of INTENTIONS. My list will be broken down by month and maybe even weeks.
When I think about our kiddos and what we ask of them I think showing them how to set a list of intentions along with goals can help them find success in the smallest of steps which in turn can help lead them on the path to fulfilling all their goals.
For instance when I ask a child to read a specific number of books on their level (AR for many of us) I will fist ask them “what are your intentions for making this goal?” “how do they intend on keeping on track?” and “what do they intend to do once they meet (or don’t) meet their goal?” For first graders I plan on breaking this into weekly goals or intentions, but for older students every two weeks, monthly, or every nine weeks would work.  Now to work on an “Intention Tracker” to help them keep it in their mind and to help them (and me) keep on top oftheir progress.
Now back to my OLW I have been having trouble deciding this year. I want something that I can Connect with and will remind me to Act on my intentions and stay Focused when I start to drift, and it has to be a word that I see often and keeps me Engaged and Energized. These are the words I came up with last night when I couldn’t sleep.
I wrote them down and then I knew my word. CAFE. It’s not naturally inspiring or inventive, but it is a word I will see every day and one that helps me remember what is important to me. When I connect with all the wonderful teachers and bloggers it reminds me to act on the important things for myself and my kiddos. I am better focused when I am doing what I enjoy such as writing and blogging. And I am engaged in many wonderful ideas, thoughts, and inspirations for my classroom as well as my own life when I am focused, connected, and acting on my strengths.
So now I have it. CAFÉ. Do you have yours?

It Was A Holly Bloggy Happy Christmas

Christmas is gone for another year. How does it come and go so fast (and faster as you get older)? It seems to be rush, rush, rush, hurry up get things done, and then all in the matter of one morning POOF it’s gone, and there is nothing left but the clean-upand hopefully some happy friends and family.
We had a really nice Christmas Eve spent with my mom and bestest buddy yep you guessed it First Grade Delight the one I unmercifully tease whenever I can, actually LIKES spending time with me and my family! She and her hubby and my mom all came out for snacks and fun. We had a White Elephant/Dirty Santa gift exchange. It was a lot of fun! Her poor hubby, my kids (and husband) treat him just like family (he kinda is). One took one of his gifts, then they took his next. All was good in the end  because I had made an extra gift just for HIM! We always have the best time when we are with them. Did I tell you he was the one to renew our vows for us a few summers ago on our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary? It is a day I will never forget and made so special by him and my bestest teaching buddy. And now it’s their 25th anniversary, Happy Anniversary to two very special people.
Why is it when your kids are little they try to see how early they can get up on Christmas morning, but when they are older they try and see how LATE they can sleep? Seriously. I was up dressed and ready before they even began to stir. I had time to check my email, stalk some blogs and eat two pieces of coffee cake before they ever opened their bedroom doors!
When they FINALLY stirred it didn’t take long to destroy my house share all our great finds for each other. Son and daughter both liked their bounty, and my hubs was super excited about his new iphone. The morning flew by and so did our yummy dinner.

I was so excited to FINALLY open my Holly Bloggy Secret Pal gift. I am not typically a patient person and when it arrived early in December it took allllll I had to leave it in its box. But it was the FIRST one I opened Christmas morning. And look at all the really cute stuff I got! Beth Ann from Taming My Flock ofFirsties was so sweet and nice. She and her daughters pick out everything together and she and one of her daughters made me these super cute napkins. Don’t you love the colors? And look at my new JOURNAL!! It is by far the prettiest one I have EVER had (it’s usually just a plain old notebook). AND I LOVE the “T” I have a “window pane” on my door at school and I am putting it there next to the cute picture my daughter has made me. I’ll post pictures of it when I do. It’s funny that Beth Ann and her daughters made my gift together because my daughter and I made my secret pal’s gift as well. I hope she liked hers as much as I liked mine. Maybe what we made will be included in my giveaway when I reach 100 followersI’m still anxiously waiting, for that. and my laundry to magically disappear.
I hope everyone had a Wonderful holiday and that time spent with family and friends is time you will always treasure.

Merry Country Christmas

Christmas 2010 Three Peas in a pod or should I say in camo??
Before the sun goes down, the Christmas lights come on, and the skillet lights up for venison sausage balls, and goose bites, I wanted to take a moment to wish all of my blogging friends and beyond a very blessed and Merry Christmas. You have made my life as a small rural school teacher seem like a metropolis filled with good friends and great teachers.

Merry Christmas
T. Klinger

Christmas Wishes

Is it sad/bad that all I want for Christmas is my laundry done and 100 followers? Seriously. I spent my day at my sewing machine and oven finishing up some neighbor gifts and Christmas Eve party goodies. I didn’t look at my computer allllllll day. I didn’t look at my laundry pile alllll day and guess what? They both still look just the same. Nobody swooped in and washed, dried, folded, and put away my laundry (and by my laundry I mean MY laundry because my kids and husband do their own). So yep it’s just mine that isn’t washed, or put away, and growing daily. I HATE laundry. But in my defense I do wash the “extra” laundry such as towels, sheets, etc. So at the top of my Christmas list of things to do tomorrow is to do my laundry. But I don’t know why because there will just be more the next day.
And then there are my followers. I am so excited and grateful to have youbut I really hope to someday soon to have 100! Is that bad? Is that something that I should wish for? By nature I am not a competitive person, but there’s just something about that little square over there and all the smiling facesI just want MORE! Maybe I should ask for therapy instead.
On a happy note my son is home for Christmas. He is cleaning his room and throwing away childhood items I thought I would never see him part with. Is he making room for new “toys” (hunting and fishing things) or is he quietly telling me he’ll be gone for good soon and hopes this will prepare me (graduates college this spring)? I’m not ready to go there yet.
I’ll just spend my time hoping for 19 more followers and for my laundry to magically disappear. I used to offer the son gas money for doing the laundry I wonder if that would work now???
Sorry I don’t have some wonderful freebie or giveaway to bribe offer new followersbut I am working on it. J

Whew a week in review

Well since I can no longer about what my silly sweet teaching buddy wants for Christmas I guess I can post about my last week before the break since I've had a few days to recuperate relax from it all.

Last week was my first full week back in my classroom without my student teacher. It was a bit lonely but I muddled through. Since I hadnt been teaching I hadnt got to do a lot of Christmasy things with the kiddos. So I tried to make up for it in ONE weeks time. Lordy I will not do that again!
I decided to give each day a theme and sent information home on Monday with the kids. Tuesday was Elf Day we wore jingle bells on our shoes and I handed out elf kisses. We did some of the fun activities from the free elf mini unit that Mrs. Saylor at Saylors log posted. We also labeled elves and wrote stories with the words we learned from the holiday labeling pack I got at TpT made by Jennifer at First Grade Blue Skies.  Finally we made cute little elves and completed a survey that came with them from The Glyph Girls at TpT. They were made to be a glyph but since we were short on time we just put them together. They turned out pretty darn cute anyway.

The next day was reindeer day. Everyone dressed in brown and we learned all about reindeer. Did you know reindeer are really Caribou and Santa has the only ones that can actually FLY? Amazing huh? Check out this cutie in her brown reindeer outfit. I WANT one!!

We also made reindeer glyphs again (yeah except for the glyph part) from the Glyph Girls. I hope the Glyph girls dont revoke my glyphing privileges, I promise I do LOVE glyphs!

By Thursday the kiddos were WOUND UP and I was WEARING OUT. But it was Grinch Day! We wore green, had Grinch Pills (green M&Ms and a big speech about pills) and made Grinch juice That Cara mentioned at The first Grade Parade. And hey lucky for me someone brought the video! So at inside recess (and a bit longer) we watched The Grinch. We then did the learning thing with whole comparing and contrasting of the movie and book. They really did quite well at this! Yay.
Finally FRIDAY and of course Santa Day! Santa hats and Christmas shirts for all. Not too much in the way of excitement this day, just some reading and writing, singing and dancing, and finishing gifts to parents. This year I they made calendars for the parents. Instead of doing a page each month we did a tree of seasons. Every three months is a page with a painted tree (by me) and the kids finger printed the leaves or snowflakes. They turned out pretty cute thanks to my delightful teacher buddy. I had put the first one in upside down, but wooo she caught it for me in the nick of time. Luckily shes the an attentive one cause Im the ehhh who gives a f flip its done- one.

By the end of the day the kids were on a roll and I was ready to go. But the party was much fun and they really liked (at least they said they did) the pillowcases I made them (until two in the morning the night before).

We have been working on pillowcases to send my Nephews unit in Afghanistan so I thought the kids might enjoy one of their own.
So thats my last/first week back in a nut shell. I know a BIG nut shell!

Speaking of BIG did you know that Hope at 2nd Grade Shennagins is giving away here ENTIRE TpT store to one lucky winner? AND Tara at 4th GradeFrolics is giving away THREE of her items, just because her husband had a birthday, no really. AND Lisa at Live, Laugh, and Love to Learn in Second Grade is having a mystery giveaway, and she is giving you FIVE ways to enter. You really do need to go check them all out, if nothing else but for the cuteness of their blogs.
Have a Great week and Holiday Yall I hope everyone is on break by now!

Cole's Little Pups

Have you seen the CUTEST Jan Brett unit yet? Mrs. Cole at Cole's Little Pups has one she is posting at her TpT shop you should check it out and become one of her followers like I did! I always do a Jan Brett unit in January. I am grabbing this Three Snow Bear's unit to add to it!

A Must Try!

A friend of mine sent me this recipe through email. I thought it very fitting for our Linky party. Let me know if any of you try it out!

Christmas Rum Cake Recipe
Once again this year, I've had requests for my Christmas Rum Cake recipe so here goes: Please keep in your files as I am beginning to get tired of typing this up every year!

1 cup Sugar
1 tsp. Baking Powder
1 cup Water
1 tsp. Salt
1 cup Brown Sugar
Lemon Juice
4 Large Eggs
1 Bottle Rum
2 cups Dried Fruit

Sample the Rum to check quality.  Take a large bowl; check the Rum again to be sure it is of the highest quality.  Repeat.  Turn on the electric mixer.  Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl.  Add 1 teaspoon of sugar. Beat again.  At this point, it is best to make sure the Rum is still OK.  Try another cup just in case.  Turn off the mixerer thingy.  Break 2 eegs and add to the bowl and chuck iin the cup of dried fruit.  Pick the fruit up off the floor.  Mix on the turner.  If the fried druit getas stuck in the beaterers, just pry it loose with a drewscriver.  Sample the Rum to test for tonsisticity.  Next, sift 2 cups of salt, or something.  Check the Rum. Now shift the lemon ice strain your nuts.  Add one table. Add a spoon of sugar, or somefink. Whatever you can find.  Greash the oven.  Turn the cake tin 360 s and try not to fall over.  Don't forget to beat off the turner.  Finally, throw the bowl through the window.  Finish the Rum and wipe the counter with the cat.

Cherry Mristmas

Hee Hee Cherry Mristmas!

You are invited to a Cookie Linky Party no clean-up required!

Well the Cookie party was a success. Many friends were here, old and new, and lots of yummy cookies and goodies too.
My bestest teacher buddy brought her yummy caramel corn (my favorite) and my mom brought her carrot cookies which have been my favorite since I was a child. Lindsay my not anymore student teacher (she graduated yesterday) came for the first time, and so did my last year’s student teacher-this year our third grade teacher, Susan. I think they had great fun, and loved my dip!

Before the cookie swap we always have snacks which included my loved-by-all cheese ball, dip, ham salad, and meatballs this year. I’m always asked for the recipe, but honestly don’t have a “fixed” one, but it is always asked for and always loved
Barbara’s borrowed recipe from Corner on Character was a yummy hit. I didn’t spend a lot of time on the decorations, oh but were they tasty (sugar cookies are my favorite) I even ate some this morning without frosting.
I thought I’d try something new this year too. I made cake balls for the first. I don’t really care for chocolate, so I used a spice cake. I mixed the cake with cream cheese frosting with a dab of cinnamon added, I dipped them in white almond bark, and sprinkled with red sugar sprinkles. Oh my! Can you say rich? One is plenty when you pop these in your mouth. I was a little worried though when I stuck them in my fridge before the frosting went on and I noticed they looked A LOT like the meatballs I had bought!

I have friend that comes every year and brings THE best homemade caramels. She was not here. Until I text her and told her I had a mad mob at my house demanding caramels, and they weren’t leaving until they got some. She soon called and said she was on her way! The day was saved!
This year (and last) instead of everyone bringing an ornament to exchange we all brought a five dollar gift card. We then had “Mrs. W” (she was my kid’s first grade teacher and I just can’t bring myself to call her “Linda” even though my “kids” are 22 and 17 and we are great friends…it’s a respect thing) read “let me introduce you to…” I found it on the net last night but can’t remember the site (I visit so many). But here it is:
Let me introduce you to the right family.

Mr. Right, Mrs. Right, Sammy Right, Susie Right & little Billy Right. Sammy Right has been away in the army and made it home for Christmas. The Right household was decorated with the left over greenery from the tree Mr. Right brought home from Uncle Lefty’s tree lot. Susie Right & Billy Right were so excited because the doorbell rang & there stood Uncle Lefty and Aunt Leftonia. Uncle Lefty was loaded down with just the right gifts for everyone. Aunt Leftonia had baked all the right cookies and pies.

Mrs. Right called everyone for dinner. Food was passed to the left and right. Everyone ate heartily & there was not much left. They all settled back to listen to Sammy Right tell tales of his adventures in the army. It brought back memories to Uncle Lefty of marching in the army himself. He could hear his old drill Sergeant Joe Righty calling out “Left, Left, Left, Right, Left.” Mrs. Right woke Uncle Lefty from his daydreams when she called everyone to go to the Right family Christmas tree.
Everyone settled around the left side of the tree and Mr. Right handed out all the gifts to the right people. Only one gift was left and when Mr. Right opened it up the message was to Have a Right Merry Christmas!!!!!
as she read we passed to the right when we heard right, and to the left when we heard left. It was great fun! I got a 5$ Wal-Mart card Woo Hoo!!!
Then it was time for cookies! And oh the cookies, cookies, cookies. I forgot to snap a picture of the FULL table, but here is one of it after everyone filled their trays.
The idea is you bring four dozen, you take MORE than four dozen homeJ We also send two trays to a nursing home for the day and night shift, and will take one to the local Hospice office.

And now it’s time to relax and invite y’all to a virtual cookie swap. It’s free of calories, and no mess to clean up. Just link up with your favorite cookie or Christmas goody recipe, then check back often for great recipes to add to your collection. Thank you Barbara for your great recipe last night, (and the beginning of this idea)! I was glad I had been to the store that morning for my Christmas baking supplies. The cookies were a great hit, and my new favorite!  And I do believe I hear one calling my name now…

Sooo Much To Say...but it's Currently December Tonight

I have Soooo much to blog about, but for now so little time to do it. So for now I will just join in Farley’s Currently at Oh Boy 4th Grade (haven’t done that in a while) you should too! and maybe in the next few days I will catch y’all up on life in first grade in the rural world, and life in the Klinger home at Christmas time!
Oh and btw Congratulations to Marlana at Lil Country Kindergarten she won the iTunes card!
Bye for now!

The Elves Were Busy

Today was Elf Day at Klinger Café! We all wore bells on our toes, listened to (and sang) Christmas music. We shared Christmas kisses, and made the cutest elves from a pattern I bought from The Glyph Girls at TpT. The kiddos elves had the best time, and were unusually very good. We ended the day filling out an elf survey, and watching Elf for inside recess. Why won't it rain all summer but when it is the week before Christmas break it rains 3 out of 5 day's? I of course forgot to take pictures of these. I will post tomorrow!

We also read this cute little book.  Have you read it? My elves really enjoyed it. After we read it and discovered we had MANY text to self, and text to text connections (and one text to spelling words lol) we decided it would be GREAT to make Santa a book of all the things we would send him for Christmas. Some of the pages turned out too cute. They drew a picture of what they would give them, and then wrote Santa here is a ________.

I explained Santa probably doesn't have a lot of room this time of year, so it would be better to send pictures than the actual things. They will be thrilled to read Santas thank you note in a day or two! I have also let them in on my secret summer jobI help out Santa and the elves every summer. That is how I always know who is talking when were busy, who gets in trouble on the playground, and who is not walking in lineJ!! Love it!
Tomorrow is Reindeer day! I wonder if we will hear them prancing around on the school roof?
"The best way to spread Christmas cheer is to sing LOUD for all to hear!"

A few Thank you's, a few tears, some laughs, and a freebie I think!

What a GREAT week.  I think this font is only fitting it is called Life is Good(my favorite T-shirts too by the way) First I won that AH-MAZE-ING drawing at Teaching First Then I opened my comments and found I had been given an award by not one but TWO wonderful blogging friends Megan at First Grade Magic and Barbara at Corner onCharacter both sent me the Liebster Blog award for being a new blog. How nice is that??  If you dont know their blogs you should go check them out they are FULL of great things.

THENNNN I was scrolling through my old emails and I saw that I had got the SUNSHINE AWARD (and there I was feeling a little left out when I saw everyone elses) I had forgotten all about that one with this crazy, busy last few weeks, Jennifer at Rowdy in First Grade sent that one my way and I feel HORRIBLE because I dont even know if I remembered to say THANK YOU. So Thank You so very much to ALL three of you, you are so NICE, and my manners are so poor L. (geeze and I gripe about my kids).  I promise I will do all the required work at the end of my post here but first on to other exciting things (and one sorta sad) about MY weekI kNOW you can hardly wait, right?

This week was my sweet student teachers last week, which is always bittersweet because you are happy for them to be on their way, but sad to have them go. We celebrated by having a PAJAMA day and party. We also wore our jammies to celebrate collecting over THIRTY pair of childrens pajamas to donate to the Scholastic Pajama drive. Have you heard of it? For every pair of pajamas you send to Scholastic they will donate a book to go with it. We did it last year, as well. The kids really enjoy it.

This week also brought my first attempt at posting a worksheet to share. We are just learning about compound words and the kids are catching on AMAZINGLY ok, pretty well, so I created this little tip about pounding the words together to make one new word. Here is it for you, I hope it works. Click here to grab it.

On a seasonal note I now have BOTH trees up and decorated MANY (fine) SOME presents bought. Tomorrow is my first Holiday party, a cookie exchange and lunch at my oldest dearest friend/cousins house. It should be a lot of FUN. I already have my ornament bought (Thank you Hadley) and will be making cookies in the morning (after I wake Hadley up to make them hee hee).
